SUBJ: State of the Colony
Dear Brothers,
It is my pleasure to report to you the continuing growth of our colony, and our success over the six months since the re-colonization of our Zeta on November 8, 2009. In that brief amount of time which has passed since then until today, the Epsilon-Kappa Zeta of Lambda Chi Alpha has been re-founded, and twenty-four Associate Members have been initiated into the bond of brotherhood. One of the most exciting things for me over this time has been the opportunity to grow and become brothers with these men, and to be able to lead them as High Alpha. It has been an excellent experience, totally different than anything else I have experienced so far at Drexel.
Not only am I proud of the strength of our brotherhood, but in the organizational accomplishments of the High Zeta, and our involvement in University Activities. All of the officers, with help from nationals and their Alumni Mentors, have been able to learn their duties and successfully run the colony for six months. Our meetings are very productive and organized.
We have been active in the community, developing a strong relationship with the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, which we have served by helping out at events and serving food to guests. This year, we have accumulated over 40 hours of community service opportunities. We also are very supportive of our fellow Greek Organization’s philanthropy events, and have had a large turn from the brotherhood at those fundraisers.
We have made a strong presence in the IFC intramural leagues; playing in each sport we have been able to. We have been praised by both officials and opponents for our sportsmanship and teamwork. Our enthusiasm was carried on through our first Greek Week, and the combined effort of the entire colony won us a 4th place overall ranking, much to the surprise of some of the other fraternities on campus!
Our enthusiasm for Lambda Chi grows everyday, with our members being proud to wear their letters on campus. We are also very excited to be able to put on the first exemplification of the ritual, and have formed very committed degree teams in preparation for May 22, 2010.
As we strive for the continued growth of our colony into a full chapter, we continually focus our efforts on completing the fifteen standards set by the national fraternity which are required for chartering. We have thus far completed seven of these requirements, and are working on the rest. All fifteen of the requirements are listed below:
- Filing monthly progress reports – have and continue to fulfill.
- Establishment of Installation Fund– achieved
- Maintain adequate Finances with a balanced budget – achieved and will continue to monitor.
- Establish a Reserve Fund of approx. $2.50 per man per month– achieved.
- Eighty percent (80 %) of members participate in extracurricular activities – achieved with ninety percent (90 %).
- Active Alumni Board – achieved
- Promote the General Fraternity Standards for Chapter Excellence Program – achieved
- Possess a full set of ritual equipment – close to attainment
- Three (3) letters of endorsement from chapters – working on
- Attend General Assembly or Leadership Conference – will attend in July 2010.
- Enact functional bylaws and code of conduct – close to attainment
- Academic Standard at or above All Men’s GPA of 2.99- currently 2.94
- Brotherhood equal to Greek average of 55, or at least 40. – need to achieve
- House Inspection – currently not applicable
- Function as a Colony for one (1) year – will achieve on November 8, 2010.
We hope to be able to fulfill all of these requirements with the goal of being re-chartered in time for a celebration to coincide with the seventieth anniversary of the original Epsilon-Kappa chartering on April 5, 1941.
I would lastly like to thank all of the alumni for the continued support of the fraternity, without whose help none of our success would be possible. On behalf of all the undergraduates, I want to say how much we appreciate your commitment to the fraternal experience of faith, hope and love, through Lambda Chi Alpha.
Yours in ZAX,
Theodore T. Speedy Jr
